When Should a Child Get Braces? A Parent’s Guide to the Right Age

by Dr. Jyoti Sharma

“When should a child get braces?” is one of the most common questions parents ask at Smiles for Kids — and the honest answer is that there is no single perfect age. The right timing depends on how your child’s teeth, jaws, and bite are developing. What is consistent is when the conversation should start: with an orthodontic evaluation around age 7.

Why Age 7 Is the Right Time for a First Orthodontic Check

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, and the first permanent molars have usually come in. That gives an orthodontist enough information to see how the bite is forming — while the jaws are still growing and easier to guide.

An evaluation at 7 does not mean your child will get braces at 7. For most children, the visit simply establishes a baseline. The orthodontist either confirms that development is on track or identifies a concern worth watching — or, occasionally, one worth treating early.

The Typical Age Range for Braces

Most children who need full braces start treatment between ages 9 and 14. By then, most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted, and the growth spurts of the pre-teen and early teen years help teeth move efficiently. Treatment in this window often takes 18 to 24 months, though every case is different.

Some children finish their permanent-tooth eruption earlier or later than their friends, so age alone is never the deciding factor. Dental development — not the calendar — determines the right time.

Signs Your Child May Need Braces

You don’t need to wait for a problem to schedule an evaluation, but these signs are good reasons to book one sooner:

  • Crowded, overlapping, or noticeably crooked teeth
  • Upper front teeth that stick out well past the lower teeth
  • An underbite, crossbite, or teeth that don’t meet when your child bites down
  • Losing baby teeth much earlier or later than typical
  • Difficulty chewing or biting, or frequent cheek biting
  • Mouth breathing or a thumb- or finger-sucking habit that continues past age 5
  • A jaw that shifts to one side, clicks, or looks out of proportion to the face

Early Treatment vs. Waiting: How Orthodontists Decide

For a small group of children, early treatment — sometimes called Phase 1 or interceptive orthodontics — makes sense between ages 6 and 10. It is typically used to correct crossbites, create space for crowded permanent teeth, or address jaw growth concerns while they are easier to guide. Early treatment can make later braces shorter or simpler, but it is not right for every child. Learn more on our early orthodontic treatment page.

For most children, the best plan is watchful waiting: periodic check-ins until the permanent teeth are ready, followed by a single, comprehensive course of treatment. A good orthodontist will tell you honestly which approach your child needs.

Braces for Kids: What Are the Options?

Today’s children have more choices than ever. Traditional metal braces remain the most versatile option and come with colorful bands kids love to change. Clear ceramic braces blend in with the teeth for a more discreet look. For older kids and teens who are ready for the responsibility, clear aligners can be an option for certain cases. The right choice depends on your child’s bite, age, and ability to follow care instructions.

Why a Pediatric Dentist–Orthodontist Makes a Difference

At Smiles for Kids, Dr. Jyoti Sharma is dual board-certified in both pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. That means your child’s bite development is monitored at routine dental visits, and when the time comes for braces, treatment happens with a doctor your family already knows — no referral to a separate office. The Bottom Line

If your child is 7 or older and hasn’t had an orthodontic evaluation, now is a great time. If you’ve noticed any of the signs above, don’t wait. Consultations at Smiles for Kids are always free, and we serve families at our Cumming, Decatur, Peachtree Corners, and Marietta offices.
